Program Description

The Basrah Employability and Entrepreneurship Program in Basrah, Iraq was a seven-month program which provided 30 undergraduate students with training, mentorship, and networking opportunities to develop their leadership, job-readiness, and entrepreneurship skills.

Sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, the program paired small groups of students with a local mentor who guided them through a customized curriculum focused on exploring career pathways, improving workforce readiness, and accessing professional networks. By engaging with monthly curriculum modules and attending meetings, participating in an online community, and receiving support from staff, students acquired skills and confidence to utilize upon graduating in the real world.

Program Goals

Enabled undergraduate students in Basrah to:

  • Gain self-awareness of their personal attributes and skills;
  • Build leadership and job-readiness skills;
  • Demonstrate knowledge on entrepreneurship; and
  • Develop relationships with professional leaders in their community.
