WASHINGTON (August 7, 2017)

World Learning congratulates Ambassador Mark Green on his unanimous confirmation by the U.S. Senate to be the next administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The organization also applauds the Senate for its bipartisan support throughout Green’s swift confirmation process.

“Ambassador Green’s decades of international experience have demonstrated he is a strong leader committed to results-based development,” said World Learning President Carol Jenkins. “As USAID administrator, he will help ensure a more effective U.S. foreign policy and robust development approach at a particularly challenging time in world affairs. We look forward to continuing to work with him and USAID to build a more peaceful, prosperous, and just world.”

World Learning has supported and partnered with USAID for more than fifty years in every region of the world, educating refugee children and low-income communities, creating better opportunities for women, wiping out poverty, amplifying traditionally excluded voices, encouraging youths to contribute to their communities, and supporting government accountability.

Green was U.S. ambassador to Tanzania from 2007 to 2009. He most recently served as president of the International Republican Institute and was previously the president and CEO of the Initiative for Global Development. Green also led the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition and served four terms in Congress as U.S. Representative for Wisconsin’s 8th District. During his time in Congress, Green played a crucial role in the creation of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), both of which help mitigate critical global issues such as HIV/AIDS and poverty.

World Learning CEO Donald Steinberg, who has previously served as deputy administrator for USAID, expressed his deepest confidence in Green. “I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Ambassador Green in the past, and he has proven himself a smart, savvy, and strategic leader. I know he will continue to build on USAID’s efforts over the past decade to ensure it remains the world’s premier development agency.”
