| Location: Jordan, Middle East Duration: 2008-2010 Funder: UNDEF Contact: civilsociety@worldlearning.org |
The Student Civic Action: Engaging and Empowering Emerging Leaders in Universities of Jordan project in Jordan funded by the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) aims to build on the socio-political awareness and emerging of Jordanian youth through developing capacity and establishing youth civil society networks. These Emerging Leaders (ELs) – youth under the age of 30 that comprise three quarters of the total population of Jordan – participate in interrelated interventions aimed towards achieving the overall goal of individual empowerment and civil society engagement with traditional and community-based governance institutions.
A well established local NGO, The Jordanian Center for Civic Education Studies (JCCES), will carry out the project. JCCES, established in 2003, promotes civic awareness in Jordanian citizens for action and advocacy of their rights and responsibilities.
The project has three main objectives:
- Objective 1: Improve EL capacity and awareness of participation in democratic processes and community development.
- Objective 2: Increase EL representation in existing political and civil society institutions. Participating ELs will also become trainers and program developers themselves and emerge as leaders within the institutions where they advocate for more representation.
- Objective 3: Develop and strengthen existing networks to build alliances of youth-led CSOs for more effective programming and sustained participation.
Key activities include:
- advocacy training workshops
- capacity building activities
- dialogues
- open forums with government institutions
- the creation of youth networks
A more enlightened and democratically active Emerging Leaders is the expected outcome.
Important intended outputs are:
- 40 Civil Society Organizations training in EL inclusion
- 100 traditional leaders and government officials sensitized in the value of EL
- 400 Emerging Leaders gain skills in advocacy, public speaking and being effective members of civil society
