Bolivia: Lens on Latin America

Landscape

Explore the dynamics of Latin America by joining award-winning filmmaker Ismael Saavedera in this hands-on summer program focused on video and media production within the Latin American context.

Based in Cochabamba, students travel to the capital city of La Paz to visit the Bolivian film archives and meet with prominent Bolivian artists and filmmakers. Travel to Lake Titicaca and rural highland agricultural villages, home to both Quechua- and Aymara-speaking cultures, provides additional field experience and cultural context.

In the last portion of the session, students will develop the skills to produce a video or media project on a topic of their choice, creating a tangible product to express their understanding of the Latin American culture. Ethnographic documentary filmmaking is a strong focus, supported by classes in production and hands-on editing in our program’s own media laboratory. Partnering with a Bolivian film student in producing video footage may be possible for those looking for intercultural production experience.
