Samoa: Pacific Islands Studies

Study the peoples of the Pacific Islands and their responses to a changing world in Samoa, the cradle of Polynesian tradition. Home to some of the world’s most remote habitats, the Pacific Ocean includes more than 20 island nations. Pacific peoples and societies face numerous challenges as they interact in the more globalized world of today, seek to maintain their cultural identities, and balance traditional values in the face of increasing social, political, and economic pressures.
Based in Apia, the program includes field excursions and access to local university resources in Hawai’i, Samoa, American Samoa, and Fiji. Students gain a broad understanding of the physical and historical forces that have shaped contemporary life in the Pacific Islands and an appreciation for the region’s rich cultural traditions.
