Panama: Development and Conservation

Rice harvest in Panama.

Explore tropical conservation and sustainable development in Panama, site of the premier tropical biology research institute in the world. The country has more bird species than all of North America, a Caribbean archipelago noted as the Galápagos of the twenty-first century, and a storehouse of endangered cloud forests. Eight unique indigenous groups and strong African colonial roots help to define its culture.

Within this extraordinary diversity, Panamanian governments, businesses, and nongovernmental organizations struggle to balance development and conservation in the age of globalization. Program partners include the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, the Institute for Tropical Ecology and Conservation, the University of Panama, and the Earth University of Costa Rica. Students collaborate with these organizations, as well as with campesino and indigenous groups and local specialists, to develop an understanding of complex issues including biodiversity and global change.
