Oman: International Economics, Energy, and Diversification in the Gulf

Examine the economic environment of the Gulf with a focus on issues in the Sultanate of Oman, a country whose geopolitically strategic location and dedication to economic liberalization are increasingly attracting foreign investors. Oman’s rentier economy and a private sector where only one in ten workers is native Omani, however, are challenges to rapid diversification. Similar issues also face other Gulf nations, where workforce nationalization policies have been implemented. In the fast-paced world of global economics, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states have emerged as important centers of finance and trade, with China and India rapidly becoming major partners.
Based in Muscat, students conduct academic fieldwork within Oman. A three-week module in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain (conditions permitting) offers students comparative insights into economic development and trade policies.
