Kenya: Swahili Studies and Coastal Cultures

Experience life in a Kenyan maritime community and examine the practice of Islam in contemporary Swahili culture. Home to the Swahili, coastal East Africa is the site of an extensive commercial network linking Africa to Asia and the Middle East since the first century.
The program base is Mombasa, the heart of commercial and cultural connections to other Indian Ocean ports. Students will travel by traditional wooden dhows and awaken with the morning call to prayer, with Fort Jesus, the 400-year-old stone edifice and gateway to the ancient city, as their neighbor. Extended studies in Lamu, an island community rich in Islamic tradition, enhance learning about the Swahili people, while homestays provide knowledge of varied coastal village life in East Africa.
