Ghana: History and Cultures of the African Diaspora

Signing a book

Gain a deeper understanding of West Africa’s links to and impact on the world through this program exploring the African Diaspora

Ghana served as the point of departure for many West Africans who have migrated - voluntarily and involuntarily - to points around the globe. Through field and classroom instruction, students examine the history and culture of West Africa and the interwoven influence of the Atlantic Slave Trade.

Educational excursions to Accra, Kumasi, northern Ghana, and to neighboring Benin encourage students to explore the diversity among cultures and historical perspectives as well as to compare the respective roles of the two nations in the slave trade and the Diaspora. As they explore Ghanaian culture, politics, economics, and society, students will gain a firsthand introduction to African views of Pan-Africanism and the global African Diaspora.
