Fiji: Multiculturalism and Social Change
Gain a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationships that challenge Fiji, a multicultural island nation and society in transition. For 3,500 years, Fiji has been a crossroads for Polynesian, Melanesian, and Micronesian peoples. In the last 150 years, British colonialists, Indian indentured laborers, and, most recently, migrants from other Asian countries have altered the composition of modern Fiji. Today, ethnic Indians make up 44 percent of Fiji’s population.
Based in Suva on Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island, students examine a wide spectrum of cultural, political, economic, environmental, and social issues. Faculty from the University of the South Pacific, as well as professionals from the government, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector, provide a variety of perspectives.
