Brazil: Public Health and Community Welfare
Investigate looming health care issues in Brazil, the most populous Latin American nation and the site of the world’s largest African Diaspora community.
Facing wide disparities of income distribution and living conditions, public health policies have achieved mixed success in alleviating some of Brazil’s most glaring health problems. The issues have prompted innovative approaches to reach groups traditionally overlooked. Many African Brazilians and others have also developed alternative health approaches, often drawing upon spiritual practices and/or natural remedies.
The program base of Salvador, the largest city in the Brazilian Northeast, offers numerous opportunities for interaction with physicians and nurses, government health officials, urban and rural residents, herbalists, healers in the Candomblé tradition, and others to help students develop a comprehensive understanding of health and community welfare.
