The U.S. State Department named Noof Assi the State Alumni Member of the month for May 2012 for her efforts to promote youth civic engagement in Iraq through social media. Assi participated in the World Learning administered Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program (IYLEP) in 2010.

Yemeni democracy advocate and Nobel Laureate Tawakkol Karman tied for the number one spot on this year's Foreign Policy Top 100 Global Thinkers list. Karman, who participated in a State Department sponsored International Visitor Leadership Program tour of the United States, was chosen for "keeping the spirit of the Arab Spring alive."
