Global Youth Leadership Institute Certificate Program

"The process creates options, not anxieties.  It requires discipline, and yet creates a culture that responds to the wisdom of the group."

World Learning collaborates with Global Youth Leadership Institute (GYLI) in its mission "to nurture collaborative leadership for global communities and to assist schools in their missions to inspire socially responsible young people."

Global Youth Leadership Institute, a nonprofit organization based in Milwaukee, offers intensive summer experiences -- onboard the replica slave-ship the Amistad; in northern New Mexico; and in Costa Rica – to teams of middle- and high-school teachers and students.  Over the ensuing school year, each team plans and implements a service project in its school or community.

World Learning trains GYLI faculty to use the IDEA (Identify, Describe, Expand, Act) process as a tool for collaborative professional development.  The IDEA process brings professionals – the GYLI faculty -- together to address issues facing them in their practice. Participants identify their own teaching /professional issues, draw on their experience and expertise to develop new understanding of each issue, and collaborate in suggesting multiple concrete actions to address it.

The course blends face-to-face and distance learning over an academic year:

  • Participants are introduced to the IDEA model.
  • In small online cohorts, participants take turns bringing an issue before their colleagues; guided by the IDEA process, each cohort develops its understanding of the issue and suggests actions to address it.
  • Participants complete readings and post written reflections.
  • After listening to a podcast prepared by an expert in professional inquiry, participants gather in a conference call to interact with the guest speaker.
  • Participants complete a final paper synthesizing their understanding of the IDEA model, and their developing skill in using it and applying it to their work with GYLI.
