For Practicing Teachers of French
(Summer MA in Teaching - SMAT)
For teachers working full time, a master's degree can seem beyond reach. This intensive two-summer program is specifically designed to meet the needs of working language teachers. Experienced practitioners from around the world study their teaching on the SIT campus. Using what they already know, courses permit investigation of important dimensions of their teaching. Returning to your classroom, they apply what you have learned.
Focus on French
Courses taught in French: Language Analysis, Lesson Planning, Applied Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication for Language teachers.
Pedagogy
Teachers in the program model the philosophy and practices of learner-centered instruction, experiential learning, reflective practice, and cooperative learning. You will experience firsthand techniques and materials that you can apply to your own classroom.
The program also presents practical solutions to teaching to the National Foreign Language Standards: Communication, Culture, Comparison, Communities, and Connections.
Learning With Others
You will enter the program as a cohort and participate in each phase of the program together with your peers. This makes for a fertile combination of backgrounds, novice and experienced teachers, and different teaching contexts. Because of the program emphasis on cooperative learning, you will form strong personal and professional bonds with one another, which will last beyond your time at SIT.
