French in US Public Schools
Certification Internship
Public School Partnerships
Over decades, SIT has developed an educational partnership with Brattleboro Union High School, where many interns have taught French. Recently, this partnership was expanded to local elementary schools with the creation of a new FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary School) program, where you will teach as an intern.
Between January and June, students are placed with cooperating teachers at public schools in Vermont. As part of your 7-month internship in local public schools, you will teach in both the elementary and high school. In both instances, you will work closely with an MAT supervisor, who will provide guidance in developing your reflective practice as a teacher, that is, the skills and awareness for describing what happens in your classroom, separating observation from judgment, finding valid explanations for what happens, and devising informed and workable solutions to enhance students’ learning and improve your teaching. You will also work on building these skills with an experienced classroom teacher of French in a mentoring relationship, in which you learn by observing and by discussion with a knowledgeable teacher.
K-12 Certification
When you complete these dual internships, you are eligible for teaching certification at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. This offers you great flexibility and a distinct advantage in seeking jobs. The certification you receive from Vermont is recognized in forty other states.
