French in US Public Schools

Coursework

The two semesters of on-campus coursework allow students to acquire the theoretical knowledge and develop the professional competencies that are essential for effective language teaching.

Language Analysis and Lesson Planning and Applied Linguistics focus on developing an understanding of the structure and usage of the French language as encountered by learners of French in classrooms. Practical, effective teaching solutions are demonstrated and practiced by teachers. The Intercultural Communication for Language Teachers course uses learning culture as a basis for teaching culture, featuring cultural identity, cultural inquiry, experiential techniques and activities. The course presents a culture-general approach, applicable to any and all of the many French-speaking cultures around the world.

Teachers in the program model the philosophy and practices of learner-centered instruction, experiential learning, reflective practice, and cooperative learning. You will experience first-hand techniques and materials that you can then apply in your own classroom.

The program also presents practical solutions to teaching to the National Foreign Language Standards: Communication, Culture, Comparisons, Communities, and Connections.

The overall goal of the pedagogical component is that you articulate and justify your own personal theory of teaching practice—your approach to teaching, founded on your principles and grounded in materials and techniques consistent with these principles.

All MAT students are also required to take a Beginning Language Study course during their first semester. The tables below show a typical course of study and breakdown of credits for this degree program.
