English as a Second Language in US Public Schools
Teaching Practicum
From January to March, students in the ESL track must complete an eight-week practicum in public schools, either in ESL classrooms or in mainstream classrooms with one or more ESL students. By assisting classroom teachers, observing students and classroom dynamics, and working with students one-on-one and in small groups, practicum students gain knowledge and skills about the public school teaching context. The practicums are also opportunities to put into practice theories and approaches explored during first-term coursework and identify areas for further exploration during second-term coursework.
Practicum sites will be designated by the MAT program and will be within a one-hour radius of the SIT campus. Students are responsible for arranging transportation to practicum sites.
