English as a Second Language in US Public Schools

Admissions Criteria

To be considered for admission, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • US bachelor’s degree or an equivalent that demonstrates academic ability
  • Demonstrated proficiency in English
  • Commitment to ESL education in US public schools
  • Intercultural experience
  • Relevant experience, including language learning and language teaching
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to use experience as a source of learning
  • An understanding of the structure and philosophy of the MAT program

Applicants for whom English is not a first language are required to demonstrate literacy and oral proficiency. While SIT has no minimum score that would automatically eliminate an MAT application, both a standardized test and an oral proficiency interview are required. SIT considers official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International Education Language Testing System (IELTS).

  • In recent years, the average computer-based TOEFL score has been 240, with scores ranging from 213 to 267.
  • The average IELTS band was 7.
  • Oral proficiency for the same group averaged Advanced on the ACTFL scale (seventh level of a nine-level scale).
  • For the new Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT), SIT's operational standard for admission for applicants whose first language is not English and who did not attend an undergraduate institution at which the language of instruction was English is a minimum total score of 79. This includes section scores of at least 24 on the writing section and 23 on the speaking section. These section scores should be considered guidelines for recommended minimum scores on the new TOEFL exam.

Scores must be dated within two years of the start date of your academic program.
