English as a Second Language in US Public Schools

In addition to teaching in their classrooms, more and more ESL teachers also serve as advocates and consultants for the needs of English language learners in their communities, schools, and districts. Changing national demographics of students in public school makes English language learners the fastest growing source of ESL jobs in the United States and has led to significant change in what ESL teachers do.

SIT's ESL Teacher Certification program prepares you in three ways:

  1. You are oriented to the roles ESL teachers play in US public schools, including advocacy and the teaching of content subject matter through English.
  2. You develop an understanding of the legal, cultural, economic, and educational issues involved in educating children who are English language learners.
  3. You learn to be a thoughtful, reflective teacher using skills—lesson planning, instruction, assessment, classroom management—that are the foundation of successful classroom teaching.

Your SIT coursework exposes you to a range of approaches to teaching and ways of thinking about learning. An experienced public school teacher guides you during an extensive practicum that focuses on observation and learning the culture of public schools, and connects your coursework to your direct experience. Later, during the internship, an SIT faculty member and a mentoring teacher enable you to put your coursework to practical use, to practice teaching using skills in reflection, and to design and implement lessons.
