This program is contributing to local efforts to develop and improve human capacity in education and civil society. USAID and the Government of Egypt have formed a partnership that works towards the joint goal of creating a variety of education and training opportunities for Egyptians. This partnership reflects the Government of Egypt’s strong interest in institutional strengthening and human capacity building and mirrors USAID’s long term goals. Approximately 100 professionals will benefit from this partnership and begin their programs in the U.S. in October 2011.
The Democracy and Governance sector of this program is exposing young Egyptian civil society activists and media leaders through internships to a range of techniques and practices utilized among U.S. civil society organizations working in democracy-related fields. The overall objective of the internships is to enhance young Egyptian civil society and media activists’ skills to understand and apply innovative and successful organizational and advocacy techniques and practices.
The learning goals include a broad spectrum of skills, including strategic management, program management, information management, media relations, networking, outreach, advocacy, financial management, human resources, volunteers, and transparency.
The Education sector of this program is implementing a training program to build the capacity of a cadre of professional leaders and practitioners in the field of science, technology and mathematics education. This program will expose the prominent opinion and educational leaders to policies, strategies and approaches to promote science and mathematics pre-university education, particularly for gifted students in the U.S.
The educators will receive State-of-the-art training in the management, administration and teaching of science and mathematics through classroom training, visits with high performing science, technology and mathematics schools, and learning about teachers’ preparation and civil society’s participation in improving the quality and relevance of science and mathematics education particularly for the gifted students.
Recruitment, selection and program administration is carried out by World Learning and its sub-contractor Institute of International Education (IIE).
