You and your group become better acquainted with Japan during orientation in Tokyo, one of the world’s largest and most exciting cities. Spend a few days exploring this bustling metropolis, home to 10 percent of Japan’s population. Begin your immersion into Japanese language and culture as you become attuned to the incredible sights, sounds, and aromas of this island nation.

Jump into Japanese culture through the magical world of anime and manga. Art and life intersect as you become part of a local family, embrace the Japanese language, and create your own piece of contemporary animated art. Following your Tokyo orientation, you and your group will journey to the northern island of Hokkaido. Japanese culture comes alive as you ease into the comfortable daily routine of your new family. During language training and workshops at a local anime school, develop the vocabulary and skills to design and animate your own character!

Sample activities: Meet with local Japanese high school and university students to practice your language skills, prepare meals with your host family; learn the art of character design, manga technique, animation, and voiceover at a renowned anime school; create a short animated clip of your own original character.
