Fishing in Belize

Live for four weeks in one of the most beautiful and ecologically diverse places on earth. About the size of Vermont, Belize is a tropical developing nation where ocelots and pumas roam the jungles, toucans roost, tapirs root, and the distinctive call of howler monkeys is loud and clear.

Orientation at the Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary

Belize group

Your rugged adventure begins in a tropical wildlife sanctuary, where you spend a week exploring the fascinating habitat and getting to know your group and leader. Local experts and your village ambassador provide a thorough introduction and answer your questions about the people and culture of Belize. During afternoon excursions, visit ancient Mayan ruins, swim in the Sibun River, explore the caves at Tiger Sandy Bay, and see exotic species at the Belize Zoo.

Homestay and Community Service

Children

Discover life in a rural Belizean village as you spend two weeks participating in the day-today activities of your warm and welcoming host family. In partnership with villagers, your group and leader work on a community service project. Through this valuable activity, you make a contribution to the community, establish deep friendships, and see your sense of accomplishment and self respect soar.

Travel and Discovery

Ruins

After your homestay and community service project, you and your group spend a few days exploring and enjoying the natural wonders of Belize.

Sample activities: Cruise from island to island off the coast of Belize; enjoy the soft, warm beaches of Tobacco Caye; explore the coral reef; snorkel with your friends; sail, swim, and fish in the clear blue waters of the Caribbean; visit the Western Caribbean Marine Research Station; practice your species identification skills; enjoy a nighttime crab walk.

Living in a Belizean community was remarkable. I will always remember the dusty red dirt roads, the smiling children, the old men playing dominos, and the melodic Creole language. From the drum school and drum circles to the short, hard rains and the gorgeous sunsets, every day was an adventure. Everyone that lived in the village was so welcoming and generous. they loved showing us around, telling us stories, and asking us tons of questions. Instead of feeling like a visitor, I really felt like part of a big village family.
