Why did you choose to participate on an Experiment program?

I chose to participate on an Experiment program because I wanted to spend a summer doing something unique and meaningful. I wanted an opportunity to travel abroad, have new experiences and meet new people. I felt it was important for me in my life journey to challenge myself and to step beyond my everyday life into something extraordinary.

What was your most meaningful experience while on your Experiment program?

I would have to say the most meaningful experience for me was my group. Thirteen students from across the country came together as complete strangers and became family by the end of our five weeks together. The trip would not have been the same without the growth, love, and support of my group members.

What was the highlight?

The highlight of my trip was traveling through the Outback on a ten day adventure in a small tour bus with my group. I learned so much about not only my group members, but about myself, Australian history and tradition.

How did you feel about The Experiment's immersion-based approach?

I feel that there aren't many other ways to immerse yourself as completely into a culture as staying with a host family. I went to school for a week with my host sister and got a real dose of what my host community valued.

How did your group contribute to the experience?

As I mentioned earlier, my group really made my experience. The transformation that we experienced from being complete strangers to being one closely knit family was amazing. We ate together, slept together, laughed and cried together. I will never forget any one of them, they are a part of me now and I miss them terribly.

In what way did the experience result in personal growth that is reflected in your current life?

It made me realize my passion for traveling and experiencing other cultures. It also awakened me to how much cultural difference exists even within the United States. I am more aware of who I am and what I value as a result of my experiences this past summer.

If you had one thing to say about why a prospective student should choose EIL, what would it be?

It will change your life. As long as you are willing to open your eyes and let the Experiment move you, you will leave with a world of knowledge and memories that you will hold with you forever. There is no substitute in life for traveling and seeing what the world can teach you. Don't pass up that opportunity.

What advice would you give to a student about to embark on an Experiment summer program?

Be open to things that are different from what you are used to. Try new foods, don't be afraid to push your limits. The experience is what you make of it and what you allow it to be.

In today's world, why is it important for young people to consider participating on an Experiment program?

We are on the brink of an age where being aware of other cultures and languages is imperative. Giving yourself that advantage, that step up, by traveling abroad at a young age and realizing that the world extends far beyond our borders is a choice you wont regret.
