Chile (South)
Bienvenidos a Chile.
In Chile, you are never far from either the Pacific Ocean or the Andes Mountains. As one of our students said while standing on a mountain, invigorated by the sight of the spectacular Andes meandering down toward the South Pole, traveling in Chile is like being "plucked from Brooklyn and put in the middle of a National Geographic picture."
Orientation in Santiago
Get to know Chile and its dynamic culture during a three-day orientation in Santiago, the magnificent capital. Stroll through Santiago’s quaint old town and bustling, modern downtown to the impressive government palace. Your Spanish skills quickly improve as you visit local markets and speak to Chileans at streetside cafés. Your orientation concludes with a fascinating exploration of the historic country town of San Felipe on the outskirts of Santiago.
Homestay in Rancagua
Journey south to Rancagua, a beautiful small city surrounded by the majestic snow-capped Andes, to begin your two-week homestay. Sharing daily activities and lively conversation gives you a real sense of life in Chile, while survival language training gives you the tools to really connect with your Chilean friends and family. During your homestay, visit surrounding towns and villages with your host family to learn about traditional lifestyles, explore the Plaza de los Heroes, and visit stunning Iglesia Catedral. You and your group also travel to the picturesque port of Valparaíso and the beach resort city of Viña del Mar.
Ecological Adventure and Community Service

Voyage deep into the Southern Hemisphere for an unforgettable 10-day exploration through Araucanía, one of Chile’s most beautiful and culturally diverse regions. Surrounded by crystal blue lakes, ancient forests, dormant volcanoes, and massive glaciers, you and your group visit Temuco, Valdivia, and Chiloé Island. You also work closely with Chileans on an important service project designed by local communities in need.

Sample activities: Learn about Mapuche culture by sharing with indigenous people in their traditional rukas; haggle with vendors at the vibrant Feria Libre market; boat down the Calle Calle River; take a ferry to the wooded island of Chiloé and ride horseback on remote beaches; learn more about the Huilliche Indians as you take in the majestic panoramas across the Golfo de Ancud.
"David reached out for my hand. he was about eight, and wore a royal blue fleece. his skin was a deep, soothing brown, and he looked up at me wordlessly with his chocolate eyes. I followed him, my hand in his, as he walked with purpose and determination to one of the red tables that filled the lunchroom. the tables were very small, and our knees touched if I moved. he did not speak any English and hadn’t said a word in the three hours that I’d been at the children’s shelter. all he wanted was to sit next to me. he didn’t need to talk. we just ate in silent contentment."
