World Learning’s Fifth Annual Race for a Reason to Benefit Women of Darfur
BRATTLEBORO, VT (April 11, 2007) -- World Learning and The School for International Training (SIT) will host the 5th annual Race for a Reason on May 12, 2007. The 5k/10k race will be held on the SIT campus in Brattleboro, Vermont. Runners will wind around the scenic landscape as they raise money for Global Grassroots and the people of Darfur, Sudan.
This year’s beneficiary, Global Grassroots, is a non-profit organization offering social entrepreneurship training and seed funding to help women launch sustainable, life-changing social ventures such as a peace library, a school cafeteria, and a women’s market cooperative. Global Grassroots started in 2005 with refugees who fled to Chad from Darfur. Global Grassroots has continued to work in the Darfur region, where the United Nations estimates the genocide has caused the deaths of over 400,000 and displaced approximately 2 million since early 2003. Funds raised by the Race for a Reason on May 12th will go directly to helping Global Grassroots fund new projects designed by the refugees themselves. Student organizers at the SIT have set a goal of $10,000 for the event.
This 5k/10k event is designed for walkers and runners of all ages and abilities. Registration begins March 15th and there is an early-bird discount price of $20. Those signing up after May 1st and walk-in participants pay $25. Children under 10 are free. The race fee includes a t-shirt, post-race food, and plenty of friendly SIT graduate students and community members to cheer you on at the finish line!
Race for a Reason is an annual project of SIT’s chapter of Net Impact, an international network of socially conscious professionals and academics who use business solutions to make positive changes in the world. Past beneficiaries have included the American Cancer Society, Spina Bifida Clinic: Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth, and the ALS Association of New England. World Learning is a 75-year-old global non-profit with operations in 78 countries and headquarters in Brattleboro, Vermont. Through its award-winning international education programs—The Experiment in International Living, SIT Study Abroad and the School for International Training (SIT)—World Learning fosters global citizenship by connecting over 3,000 young ambassadors annually across cultural differences and social barriers.
