World Learning Announces 2007 Serbia Youth Leadership Program
Program promotes intercultural understanding between Serbian and American youth
WASHINGTON, DC (September 4, 2007) -- World Learning, in partnership with the US State Department’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, Civic Initiatives, the Council for International Visitors, and a Serbian NGO, is pleased to announce the 2007 Serbian Youth Leadership Program (SYLP), a four-week educational exchange opportunity in the United States for Serbian high school students ages 15-17. The Program seeks to build leadership skills and civic awareness among Serbian youth from different ethnic groups while promoting a sense of mutual understanding, respect and collaboration between citizens of Serbia and the US.
Nineteen students and three adult educators – selected for their academic achievement, community service, potential leadership skills and English language competency – will arrive on September 8, 2007 at World Learning’s campus in Brattleboro, Vermont for a week-long Orientation and Leadership Camp. From there, they will divide into two groups and travel to either Denver, Colorado or Huntsville, Alabama for over two weeks, where students will attend local high schools and stay with local families.
During these community visits, the students will engage in local community service, receive mentoring from NGO and community leaders, and lead individual research projects before concluding the US portion of the program in Washington, DC. Back home in Serbia, small grants will help students launch community service activities within their own communities while a host of post-program activities will ensure sustained impact of the program on ongoing Serbian-American relations.
