World Learning Signs Letter of Support for Education for All Act – SIT Students Play Important Role
BRATTLEBORO, VT (April 28, 2008) -- World Learning was one of 57 international organizations to sign a letter of support for The Education for All Act (H.R. 2092/S. 1259), which seeks to provide support to the 72 million children around the world who lack access to basic education, putting many at risk of infectious disease and coercion into labor, trafficking and military service.
The letter of support, signed April 21, was delivered April 22 to House and Senate offices by students as part of Global Action Week and in coordination with the Global Campaign for Education. Last October, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, SIT graduate students rallied faculty, staff and other students on SIT’s campus in Brattleboro to sign a petition for Senator Bernie Sanders and Congressman Peter Welch to sign the Education for All Bill (Read more about student efforts). Thanks to student efforts, these two lawmakers recently signed the bill, lending momentum to this national effort.
The EFA Act will provide vital bilateral US support to governments that have demonstrated their commitment to achieve the ambitious goal of universal basic education through rigorous, technically-vetted, accountable and measurable national education and economic plans.
