Coursework Highlights

The curriculum for SIT Study Abroad programs is interdisciplinary and derives from an experiential, field-based program model. Each program has a set curriculum in which all students are automatically enrolled.
Programs offer many different language options, and most offer multiple levels of language classes. Students with proficiency can conduct field work using the target language; those just learning may be surprised by how much they can accomplish. In most of our programs in French and Spanish speaking countries, all courses will be conducted in the target language.
In the thematic seminar, students will examine all angles of an issue, incorporating different disciplines and theoretical foundations. Students will explore important global issues, but within the framework of their unique location. The seminar necessarily deepens as the program progresses and as students are able to synthesize ideas and information, applying each lesson within a new context.
Through the Field Study Seminar, students learn the tools and skills necessary to succeed in fieldwork in that location. Students gain insight into biases of informants and researchers, and practice with different methods. Many of the Field Study Seminar assignments and discussions correspond with subject matter being covered in the thematic seminar.
For many students, the final course - the Independent Study Project - is the highlight of the semester. During this four- to five-week period, students conduct research on a topic of interest and relevance to the program theme, culminating in a 20-40 page paper, or an alternative format such as photo-essay, film, or performance.
