SIT Study Abroad Scholarships
About one-third of scholarship applicants receive financial assistance to participate in our programs. Only SIT Study Abroad participants can be considered for SIT Study Abroad scholarships. Awards generally range from $500 to $5,000. Financial need is a primary consideration for all of our scholarship decisions other than those for the SIT Asia Fund, which places more emphasis on merit.
We use our scholarship funds to ensure that a diverse group of students can participate from all regions in the US—and abroad—and from a variety of colleges and universities.
Please note that funds are limited, and we are unable to award a scholarship to every applicant. If you receive scholarship funding from SIT, you will be required to submit a written report on your experience by July 1st for spring programs, January 15th for fall programs, and September 1st for summer programs.
Scholarship funds are available for semester and summer participants.
Before You Apply for SIT Scholarships
- Review financial aid options through your home college.
- Note that SIT has one scholarship application for all of our funds. We will review your application for eligibility from all sources that SIT has available.
- Note that your scholarship application will only be reviewed if it is complete and you have been accepted to an SIT Study Abroad program.
How to Apply
Unlike program admissions, scholarship decisions are not made on a rolling basis. The scholarship committee adheres to strict deadlines that correspond with program-specific application closing dates. Scholarship decisions will be made after the program closing dates, regardless of when the program fills.
Fall Semester Closing Dates:
May 1: For Brazil, Kenya, and Tanzania
May 15: For all other programs
Spring Semester Closing Dates:
November 1 for all spring programs
Summer Program Closing Dates:
April 1 for all summer programs
Materials to Submit
To apply for a scholarship, you must submit the following four items. Note that some specific scholarships have special requirements; see the list of scholarship funds for more information. Your scholarship applications will not be reviewed until you have been accepted for admission and all three items below have been received.
- SIT Study Abroad scholarship application
- Copy of your most recent Student Aid Report (SAR) - the report generated from completing the FAFSA form. International students and others who may not have an SAR should contact our Financial Aid Office for an alternative form to complete.
- Financial Assessment Form
- Houston International Scholarship Supplemental Form, if applying for that scholarship
Please return your scholarship application by fax to 802.258.3500 or mail to SIT Financial Aid Office, Kipling Road, P.O. Box 676, Brattleboro, Vermont USA 05302-0676
What Happens Next
- Check WebAdvisor a few days after you submit your scholarship application to be sure that we have received all pieces. Note that WebAdvisor is password-protected to ensure privacy. Usernames and passwords are issued once SIT receives an application and are communicated to students by email. If you have lost or forgotten your log-on information, please contact us.
- You will not be considered for a scholarship if any of the required scholarship materials are missing at the time of the application deadline.
- Scholarship awards will be announced by email three to four weeks after the application deadline.
Other Funding Sources
External ScholarshipsYou may want to consider these external scholarships:
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships - for students receiving federal need-based financial aid.
National Security Education Program (NSEP) Boren Scholarships - for study abroad in countries other than in Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
You can also consult these directories to identify other external scholarships:
Other Loan Options
Students may decide that they need additional support in the form of an alternative (private) education loan or a Parent PLUS Loan. In most cases it is possible for your home college to certify these loans as they do your other financial aid. Please note that because students are not enrolled in a degree-granting program at SIT, we are unable to certify these loans for study abroad students.
