CONTACT Certificate Program Components
Summer Institute (3 credits)
Participants are introduced to the basic concepts and skills needed for work in conflict transformation. With participants representing more than 25 countries and a wide variety of cultural, regional and ethnic backgrounds, the Summer Institute creates a multicultural learning laboratory in which the skills and techniques learned can be immediately applied, tested and evaluated.
Frameworks in Peace building (1 credit)
Graduate Certificate participants remain at World Learning after the Summer Institute for an additional four-day course introducing some of the concepts that will be explored in the online coursework. Participants also evaluate their experience and skills and receive technical training to prepare them for distance learning and the professional practicum.
Online Courses (6 credits)
The first on-line course, Intercommunal Conflict Analysis, starts in early September and finishes in mid-December. The second online course, Intercommunal Conflict Intervention, commences in late January and ends in mid-May. Both courses are facilitated through interactive distance learning software called Blackboard.
Mid-Year Field Seminar (1 credit)
This one-week course conducted in a post-conflict zone allows participants to observe first-hand the implementation and practice of the theories that they have learned during the program. Field seminars have been held in Cyprus, Bosnia and most recently in Kigali, Rwanda.
Independent Study (1-2 credits)
With the guidance of CONTACT faculty participants design a study plan proposing the acquisition or refinement of a specific conflict intervention skill such as dialogue, mediation, or negotiation.
Professional Practicum (1-3 credits)
The practicum gives participants an opportunity to put into practice the knowledge, skills and self-awareness that they have acquired throughout the program in the form of a work-related project. With the guidance of CONTACT faculty, participants design and implement a conflict transformation project and receive one academic credit for every 150 hours of practicum related work performed.
Final Synthesis Project (1 credit)
Participants complete a final paper and portfolio demonstrating the skills and lessons learned through a synthesis of their learning through the components of the program and develop plans for continued professional development.
