CONTACT Certificate Program Specializations

Participants in the Graduate Certificate specialize in either Civil Society Initiatives or the Psycho-social Foundations of Peace building.

Specializations are opportunities for participants in the program to focus parts of their coursework, their independent study and their professional practicum in either civil society initiatives or psychosocial foundations of peace building.

Psychosocial Foundations of Peacebuilding

The Psycho-Social Foundations of Peace building specialization within the CONTACT Graduate Certificate program is designed for working mental health practitioners who wish to take their careers in a new direction or bring new skills to their current careers. The program prepares participants to work with populations, both in the US and abroad, who suffer from the effects of intercommunal conflict, war or mass violence.

Through the program, participants develop the capacity to:

  • Promote dialogue and reconciliation
  • Address the psychological and social effects of trauma
  • Develop culturally sensitive models and accommodate indigenous approaches to healing
  • Train local professionals
  • Provide emotional support to humanitarian aid workers

Civil Society Initiatives in Peacebuilding

The Civil Society Initiatives in Peace building specialization prepares participants for work in Track Two (nongovernmental) citizen peace building in their own communities or as third party actors.

Participants develop the capacity to:

  • Analyze conflict
  • Utilize conflict analysis to develop appropriate, sensitive, and timely interventions for conflict prevention, consensus building, and postwar reconciliation
  • Effect sustainable, community-based approaches to conflict and to the restoration of intercommunal links through dialogue and other relational initiatives
