ACCESS is designed with two integrated components:

Student studying outside

A seminar phase involving twenty-five to thirty hours of workshops in a modular format offered at SIT or on-site at a school or district. Modules can be adapted to address the needs of a specific context.

An implementation phase of approximately three months during which participants apply what they are learning directly in their classrooms. Teachers are supported by peer observation and coaching as well as on-line support through a web-based conferencing environment.

ACCESS is offered through the SIT Graduate Institute. The course is supported by resources at SIT, including faculty from the MAT program in TESOL.  ACCESS is facilitated by a lead trainer (licensed by SIT) working in collaboration with local specialists as co-facilitators. The co-facilitators may be ESL specialists, program administrators or content teachers with experience or training in working with English language learners.

ACCESS facilitation

Before the ACCESS course begins, the lead trainer and co-facilitators assess the needs of the participants to adapt the curriculum if necessary. Local co-facilitators may also guide the implementation phase of ACCESS, by modeling peer coaching and supporting on-line dialogue.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants are eligible for three graduate credits by writing a final summary assignment.
