Finding Library Materials

How to Find a Book

1. How do I find a book in the library’s collection?
You can use the library’s online catalog to find materials in the Donald B. Watt library. See the links below for more information.

2. How can I find Capstones and/or IPPs in the library catalog?
There are a number of ways to search for a Capstone or IPP depending upon what you are looking for. If you know the name of the author the easiest way to search is to go the library’s online catalog, click on "Simple Search," and search by the author’s name, last name first.

If you want a list of all Capstones or IPPs the library owns, go to the library’s online catalog, click on "Simple Search," and do a call number search using "Capstone" or "IPP" as the call number.

If you want to find IPPs or Capstones on a specific subject, go to the library’s online catalog and click on "Guided Keyword." Put "Capstone" or "IPP" in the first box, click on the button before "and" and put a keyword in the next box.

3. Are Capstones and IPPs available full-text online?
As of 1999, the library has required that all theses be handed in with an electronic copy as well as a hard copy. Students are asked if they will give permission to the library to share their thesis electronically with the World Learning community. The library is currently working on a project to allow access to Capstones and full-text online through the library catalog. Currently, however, you will find that most are not available full-text online.

Those that are not accessible full-text online may be available to be sent to you electronically. If there is a note on the record of the Capstone or IPP that you are looking at that says "Library has electronic copy (permission granted)" you may write to the library at library@sit.edu to request that the staff send it to you as an e-mail attachment.

Please be aware that most theses written prior to 1999 will not be available electronically and those that we do not have copyright permission to share cannot be sent electronically. Depending upon the year they were published and where you are located we may be able to check out the hard copy to you and mail it to you. Please see our remote user policy for more information.

4. How can I access your electronic databases?
To access our electronic database go to the Search our Databases web page. If you are off-campus you will be prompted to enter your library card’s barcode number and your last name in order to get into any of the databases.

If you have problems accessing the databases please contact the library at library@sit.edu or 802.258.3354.

How to Find Articles

5. How can I find articles in your collection?
For information about finding articles either in print or electronic format click on the link below.

6. How can I read online books in the ebrary database?
Go to the Search our Databases web page and click on the ebrary link. If you are on-campus you can search for a book and read it without downloading the ebrary reader.

If you are off-campus you will be prompted to enter your library card’s barcode number and your last name. Also, if you are off-campus, the first time you use ebrary you will need to download the reader to your computer. The link to the ebrary reader is on the homepage of ebrary. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the download. Once you have downloaded the reader you will not need to download it again the next time you use ebrary.

7. I am an AD in the Study Abroad Program. How can my students access the electronic databases?
At the summer AD workshop you were given 10 library cards for your students to use to access the electronic databases. The students will need to enter their barcode number and the name on the card exactly as it appears in all small letters. Please remember to collect these cards at the end of the semester. You will need to reuse them each semester.

If you do not have any cards or are having trouble accessing the databases please contact the library at library@sit.edu or 802.258.3354.

8. How can I access e-reserves?
To access e-reserves you will need to have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer. All on-campus computers will have it already installed. If your personal computer does not have Adobe Acrobat installed you can download it for free here.

Once you have Adobe installed go to the library’s online catalog and click on the button that says "Course Reserves." Select the instructor and course from the drop down list. Then click the Search button to begin your search. Select a record you wish to view by clicking on the blue number next to the title If the item is an electronic reserve, click on the box marked "Linked Resources." Click on the link to the article and enter your barcode number and last name when prompted to do so. Click on the link to view the article.

Circulation Questions

1. The book I want is checked out. Can I put a hold on it?
Yes. If you do a search for a book and it says that it is charged you can put a hold on it. When it is returned, it will be set aside for you and you will be notified that it is available for you at the circulation desk.

To place a hold, do a search on our online catalog for the book you want. When you have the record for the book on the screen, click the button on the top of the screen that says "request." You will be prompted to enter your barcode number and last name. Once you have logged in, you will be asked what kind of request you want to place. Choose "hold" and click "ok." From there you will be asked if you want any copy of the book available or a specific copy number. In most cases, you would choose any copy. Then you must re-enter your barcode number from your library card. You may then add a comment and choose when the book is not needed after. Click on submit and the system will tell you that your request has been successful. Click on the exit button at the top of the screen to exit your login.

If you have a problem or the system does not accept your request please contact the library at library@sit.edu or 802.258.3354

2. Can I check out books if I am not on-campus?
Registered students, staff, and faculty may check out books from the Donald B. Watt Library even if they are not able to come to campus. Please use the remote user book request form to request an item. Library books will only be mailed within the United States and Canada. The following items cannot be retrieved or mailed to students: Items that have restricted use such as reference books or whole issues or volumes of magazines or journals.

All books have a due date one month from check out. Books can be renewed as long as no one else has requested the book. Patrons are responsible for books checked out in their name until they are returned. We recommend that the patron pack the books securely for return and insure them in case of loss or damage.

Please see our remote user policy for more information regarding services we provide to our off-campus students.

3. How can I get hold of a book or article that is not in your library?
If the book or journal title you are looking for is not in our library we may be able to get it on interlibrary loan for you. Go to http://ill.sit.edu/illiad/illiad.dll to logon to our interlibrary loan system and place a request.

4. How can I renew my books?
To renew your library books go to the library’s online catalog and click on the button marked "Patron Login." You will be prompted to enter your barcode number and last name. Once you have logged in, you will see a list of all items you have checked out. There are little boxes to the left of the titles. Check on the boxes next to all the books you want to renew and click on "Renew Items." The renewal status on the right hand side of the screen will change to let you know if the items have been renewed and what their new due date is.

Please note that some items cannot be renewed, including those that have a hold request placed on them, interlibrary loan books, or books that have already been renewed more than the number of times allowed. Click on the exit button at the top of the screen to exit your login.

If you have problems renewing your books please contact the library at library@sit.edu or 802.258.3354.

5. Can I check language software out of the library?
No. Language learning software is restricted to in-library use only. The software is installed on the two language learning computers in the Language Resource Room. To use the software, find the CD-ROM on the small shelf next to the language computers and put it into the computer. The program should start automatically. There are headphones and speakers available for checkout at the Circulation Desk.

6. I am not affiliated with SIT. Can I use your library?
Yes. The Donald B. Watt Library welcomes community members to use our library materials. You will need to pay a one-time $25 fee in order to receive a library card. Please refer to our circulation policy for more information.
