Civic Engagement
Upon returning home students may feel inspired to be more civically engaged. World Learning hopes to empower its students to contribute to positive social change in the US through engagement in their home communities and continued involvement in the host country/culture. Below you will find resources that will guide your civic engagement.
Peace Corps
Did you know that Peace Corps held its early trainings at World Learning? World Learning still has strong connections to the Peace Corps. Our Master’s International Graduate Program allows you to earn a Master’s degree while also participating in the Peace Corps. This is a great way to put merge theory and practice into your graduate experience. Find out more about SIT’s Masters International program.
US Role in the World
This guide pulls together facts, arguments and the most effective ways to get them across for advocates of pragmatic, principled, effective and collaborative US global engagement.
Literacy for Globalist
SIT graduate Joyce Francis developed a multi-media, online curriculum for citizen self-education about America’s global affairs. Her work and resources are free and updated regularly to keep up with news and events.
Campus Activism
This interactive website has tools for progressive activists. It is part of a network of websites that share information called the Activism Network. Users provide the content. You can use it to start a campaign, share activism resources, publicize events, and build networks. Or you can join an existing campaign, get resources, learn about upcoming activist events, and let people find you.
Americans for an Informed Democracy
This organization intends to bring the world home to the next generation of leaders through educational seminars and conferences, leadership summits, town hall meetings, opinion pieces, and global videoconferences.
Association of American Colleges & Universities
Their Civic Engagement page includes publications on civic engagement and a list of some campus centers specializing in civic engagement.
Campus Compact
A coalition of university presidents committed to deepening students civic and social responsibility. Adam Weinberg, the Executive Vice President & Provost of World Learning, is an active member of Campus Compact. Their website is a clearinghouse for scholarships, service-learning resources and ways to take action.
Idealist.org
Idealist is a project of Action Without Borders, a nonprofit organization founded in 1995 with offices in the United States and Argentina. Idealist is an interactive site where people and organizations can exchange resources and ideas, locate opportunities and supporters, and take steps toward building a world where all people can lead free and dignified lives.
