Masindi IDP camps and Refugee Camps

These Internally Displaced People’s camps in Masindi, southwestern Uganda, provide an excellent setting in which to study the dynamics of displacement. Working with a local NGO, students explore the impacts of displacement, and local, national and international responses to the challenges.

Rwanda Genocide Memorial

Situated at the site for mass burial of the 250,000 victims of Kigali’s genocide, the Kigali Memorial Centre is a place for reflection and learning. Using exhibitions, videos, clippings, and quotes, the memorial explores the history and origins of genocide, its impacts, and the post-genocide period as well as reconciliation and peace efforts. Many visitors to the memorial cite this as a life-transforming experience.

National Unity and Reconciliation Commission

At this site, students examine the local responses to genocide and see how the Rwandan community is dealing with the legacy of this humanitarian disaster.

Gacaca Court System

Students gain an understanding of the Rwandan solution for addressing the crimes that were committed, through integration of traditional and modern systems of justice.

Ntarama and Nyamata

The churches in these towns were two sites where genocide took place. Students have a chance to talk with survivors and reflect on the personal impact of this violence. These visits can be emotionally trying, as they put a real face on the ordeal of genocide.

The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda

Based in Arusha, Tanzania, the ICTR was established to bring the suspects of the Rwanda genocide to trial. Students examine the role of the tribunal as and its potential to bring justice for millions of Rwandans.
