Netherlands: Islam, Diaspora Communities, and the EU

Educational Excursions

CanalsThe Netherlands program includes educational excursions designed to complement classroom study and give students the opportunity to experience firsthand the social and political dynamics of Muslim culture. Educational excursions also enable students to apply concepts introduced in the classroom, such as field study techniques and cross-cultural communication skills.

Paris and Brussels
Excursions to Brussels and Paris allow students the opportunity to compare the situation of Muslim diaspora communities in major Western European cities and to study perspectives on integration and tolerance in these countries. In Brussels, students attend lectures by social activists and policy makers from Belgium and other European countries. During their three-day stay in Paris, students meet with representatives from the International Institute for Islamic Thought.

Antwerp
During the sixth and seventh week of the program, students go to Antwerp, Belgium, where they stay with host families from a Muslim diaspora community. Here, students attend lectures and visit local NGOs.

Istanbul
One of the program's highlights is a two-week stay in Istanbul, Turkey where students participate in homestays with host families and experience life in a Muslim country. Students compare their experiences in Istanbul with previous excursions to Antwerp and Paris and identify and discuss the differences between Muslim communities in majority and minority countries.
