Netherlands: International Perspectives on Sexuality and Gender

Program Excursions

An excursion to Croatia and Turkey provides opportunities to learn more about sexuality, and gender identity in other countries, specifically in urban environments that are quite different from Amsterdam.

During this two week-long excursion, the group will participate in lectures by prominent Croatian and Turkish researchers or activists on gender and sexuality issues, as well as visits to sites of cultural and historic importance.

In Croatia the group compares and contrasts the similarities and differences between the Western European and Central/Eastern European perspectives on these issues.

Turkey is one of the major sending nations for immigrants to the Netherlands and the rest of Europe. The program examines sexuality and gender in the context of a secular and Muslim nation that is seen as a bridge between Western Europe, the European Union and the Islamic world.

Students will also travel to Berlin, where they can explore gender and sexuality issues in another EU country.  In the fall, the excursion is usually planned to coincide with the city’s Lesbian Film Festival.  Students also visit nonprofit and outreach organizations relating to immigrants, HIV/AIDs, or gay youth support.

The program also travels around the Netherlands. Students participate in a solo excursion, where they travel alone to another province of the Netherlands and spend the night there. The group also travels to Den Haag (The Hague) and to Utrecht.
