Madagascar: Ecology and Conservation

Excursions

Working in the fields

During the major excursion, the program travels to Tulear, where students begin the Marine Studies unit.  Students see mangroves and coral reefs and explore one of the world’s largest barrier reefs, the Great Barrier Reef of Tulear.

From Tulear the group travels to the capital city, Antananarivo, visiting some of the country’s fabulous national parks along the way. Students see a great range of vegetation types, including spiny forest, savanna, transitional forests, alpine and rainforests. In Tana the group focuses on the ecology, conservation and Malagasy culture, integrating what they have seen before. Shortly thereafter, students embark on their Independent Study Projects.

Students will also spend a week in a rural village, learning about rural life and the social aspects of conservation and development needs in Madagascar.
