The Balkans: State Building and Human Rights in the South Balkans

Program Excursions

Please note: Program activities are subject to change.

This program involves constant travel, as each new location introduces another layer or angle on the questions inherent in the South Balkans today.  Students will spend ten days in Montenegro for orientation and an introduction to government officials and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) focusing on anti-corruption, minority rights, and the prevention of human trafficking.
From there, they spend a bit less than a week in Serbia.  Students explore Serbia in the context of the region, Roma issues and organizing, domestic violence prevention, and human rights initiatives.

In Kosovo, students will meet professors and students at American University in Kosovo (AUK), human rights activists, government officials, and UN and EU missions.

From there, students travel to Macedonia for the 10-day community action project and 2 week homestay. Final presentations and evaluation take place in Ohrid, a multiethnic, lakeside region with major Orthodox monasteries. The group will stop before that in an Albanian community in Tetovo, where they will meet with Albanian political leaders and NGOs.
