Oman: Political Culture and Development

Coursework

Oman is a fascinating place to study in the context of evolving cultural, economic and environmental priorities. Oman faces upcoming challenges to its economy, including the petroleum industry, its workforce, and incorporation of social change and identity issues. The coursework, based on SIT’s experiential, field-based program model, provides an essential foundation in Oman’s history, political culture and development, and allows students to examine how current issues in Oman translate into policy, as well as relate to regional Gulf politics and development initiatives.

Key issues include 1) identity in Oman, including tribalism and religion; 2) Oman’s economy; 3) development initiatives, particularly in health and education; 4) political reform (liberalization and elections).

The following syllabi are either from a recent session of this program or for an upcoming session. Because courses develop and change over time to take advantage of dynamic learning opportunities, actual course content will vary from term to term.
