Nepal: Culture and Development
Faculty and Staff
Christina Monson, Academic Director
Christina Monson received her BA in Religious Studies from Brown University and completed a Master’s degree in South Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She conducted fieldwork in Nepal as an independent research scholar at Tribhuvan University from 1993 to 1995, focusing on the synergies between Tibetan Buddhist and Newari Buddhist practice traditions in the village of Pharping, on the outskirts of the Kathmandu Valley. During this time she also coordinated the collection, editing, and printing of an important philosophical collection of teachings by a famous Tibetan Buddhist female saint and continues to work on translating parts of this work.
After running a successful Tibetan carpet import business in the United States, Christina returned to Nepal in 2000 to direct the SIT Nepal program. She believes that the current situation in Nepal provides a dynamic and challenging environment to explore issues of multiculturalism and democracy, social entrepreneurship, and cultural and political identity. Christina is a member of the Nepal Fulbright Commission Board and greatly enjoys helping college students examine the complexity of international development within the Nepali context.
