Mali: Gender, Health, and Development

Program Excursions

Women dressed in black

Please note: Final arrangements are subject to change

The program includes visits to the Niger River towns of Ségou, Mopti, and Timbuktu (conditions
permitting), as well as to fabled Djenne and to Dogon villages along the Bandiagara cliffs, to give a sense of the variety of cultures and ways of life in Mali.

To afford direct knowledge of Malian rural development issues, participants live for one week in
a small Bambara-speaking village near Bamako. Village conditions are basic, frequently with no
electricity or running water, and provide an invaluable opportunity to learn from rural Malians.

Djenné

The oldest known city in sub-Saharan Africa, Djenné is situated on the floodlands of the Niger and Bani rivers, 354 kilometers (220 miles) southwest of Timbuktu. This city is now an agricultural trade center, of diminished importance, with several beautiful examples of Muslim architecture.  One example is the Great Mosque, a World Heritage Site made of sun-dried mud bricks that are held together by mud mortar and plastered over with mud. The old Town of Djenné is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pivot/Sant

Here students learn about programs that have been established to address current health issues and help fight diseases such as HIV/AIDS. The group will have an opportunity to visit fields and to participate in projects of their choices.

Muso Kunda (Women's Museum)

This museum exhibits historical customs and traditions of Malian women. The group will also learn about the struggle for women's emancipation.

Center Aoua Keita

This center serves as a women's training and learning center. Women learn about and receive education on developing the necessary skills to find employment. Many women in this center receive training to become tailors, nurses, managers of small businesses, teachers, and how to form micro-credits and cooperatives.
