Kenya: Swahili Studies and Coastal Cultures

Athman Lali Omar, Academic Director

Athman Lali Omar received his BA at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, his MA at Yale University and is currently completing a PhD program at the University of Florida.  He has been a Swahili instructor both at Yale University and the University of Florida.   Mr. Omar has served as a research scientist at the Fort Jesus Museum, located in Mombasa, and at the Lamu Museum, located on the island of Lamu.  For the past several years, he has worked with the National Museums of Kenya as the Head Coastal Archaeologist, Fort Jesus Museum in Mombasa, Kenya. Mr. Omar is also involved in community services.  He is a board member on the Coast Provincial Educational Board and Madrasa Resource Centre in Kenya.  In May to October 2005, Mr. Omar served as the Head of Division of Archaeology National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi. Mr. Omar served as Academic Director of the Kenya: Coastal Studies program in 1990-91, and resumed the position for the Kenya: Swahili Studies and Coastal Cultures program since the fall of 1998.
