Ghana: Urban Ethnomusicology

Program Highlights

Students in the countryside
Ghana’s Diversity

In Ghana’s urban centers, students find some of everything. Vibrant African clothing, good local food, drumming, music and dancing are abundant, though Western influence is noticeable on the surface. The tropical countryside ranges from palm fringed beaches to dense rain forests, to open savannah grasslands. Rural housing goes from concrete to mud and wattle, from tin roofs to grass thatch, from rectangular to circular architecture. Whatever else Ghana is, it is always engaging!

For the most part the program consists of classes in the mornings and participation in workshops and attending performances during afternoon sessions. Students have exposure to both Ga music from Accra as well as other styles from around the country.

Comparative Experiences Around Ghana

Students spend much of the program in three urban centers in Ghana, the two largest cities, Accra and Kumasi respectively, and Tamale, the largest city in Northern Ghana. The program also includes a week concentrating on practical sessions in the Volta Region in southeastern Ghana, close to the border with Togo.

Hands-On Participation and Performances

For the most part the program consists of classes in the mornings and participation in workshops and attending performances during afternoon sessions. Students have exposure to both Ga music from Accra as well as other styles from around the country.
