Chile: Culture, Development, and Social Justice
Program Highlights
Gain perspectives on social and political challenges
From 17 years of dictatorship and a process of transition to democracy, Chile has undergone cultural, economic and social transformations resulting not only from its recent conflictive history, but also from the impact of globalization on local processes. Students are introduced to the social, cultural, and political means by which Chileans seek new ways of representation, communication and identification. The program also examines the nature of the challenges facing the indigenous peoples of Chile from their perspectives. Students explore links between international images of a successful economic model with the deep social inequalities expressed in class, gender and racial discrimination. Finally, in respect to the human rights violations during Pinochet's regime, students witness the crucial debate between truth and justice on one hand, and reconciliation on the other.
Community work in Valparaiso
The experience of volunteer work in six different local Valparaiso communities has been a rewarding and reciprocating experience for both students and local grassroots organizations. Each week students participate in varied activities working with mentally challenged children, adults recovering from schizophrenia, workshops for youth with drug addictions, socially disadvantaged youth, single adolescent mothers; and with local communities working to recover public spaces and buildings.
Anamuri: Rural and indigenous women's organization
Anamuri is an organization of rural and indigenous women, working to promote and defend their rights. Students interact with these women and learn about their challenges fighting for fair wages, as well as their role and participation in agricultural production, commercialization, work conditions, gender, and labor relations.
