He received his MA in Latin American Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1980. In 1976, as a part of his undergraduate studies, he spent a year at the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro studying Brazilian culture. In summer 1985, as a part of his legal education, he studied law in Salvador, Bahia, as a Tinker Foundation Fellow. Mr. Calhoun has also studied Cuban law at the University of Havana as a member of the Inter-American Law Institute. He returned to Bahia as a Fulbright Scholar from 1986-1988. In 1988, he joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin's Law School. Mr. Calhoun has participated in several international investigations of systematic violation of the civil, political and human rights of minorities in Brazil. He was a member of a World Council of Churches team investigating discrimination in Brazil. From 1974-76, he worked as an instructor for CELAM (the Latin American Catholic Bishops Conference) headquartered in Bogota, Colombia. In this capacity, he taught and helped community and religious organizations in thirteen Latin American nations, including Brazil. He has a deep love for Brazil and looks forward to sharing that love with others. The country and the people are very much a part of his life and have tremendously influenced his academic, personal and professional growth.
