Brazil: Amazon Resource Management and Human Ecology

Gustavo Hees de Negreiros, Academic Director

Gustavo Hees de Negreiros received a bachelor's degree in Geography from the Universidade Federal Fluminense in Brazil and in 2004 received his Ph.D. in Ecosystem Analysis from the College of Forest Resources at the University of Washington.  Dr. Negreiros' research on Amazonian ecology includes modeling and mapping deep root forests, environmental impact assessment of large industrial projects in the Amazon, and more recently, fire and flammability modeling of the Amazon forests with support from the U.S. Forest Service, INPE (The Brazilian Institute for Spatial Research) and NASA.  His published research appears in various conference proceedings, the journals Nature, Ciencia y Cultura and Global Change Biology, as well as the edited volume Evaluating and Monitoring the Health of Large Ecosystems (1995).  Dr. Negreiros was the Academic Director for SIT in Belém, Brazil during the fall 1998 and spring 1999, and has continued as Academic Director since the fall 2000 semester.
