The Balkans: State Building and Human Rights in the South Balkans

Program Highlights

Community Action Project

Students participate in a 10-day community action project, where they work with an organization in the Roma community, a minority group in the Balkans. Students not only give back to their homestay community, but they also reflect on the role of international assistance and grassroots action.

Transnational Program

The south Balkans is in constant transition, with new states emerging and established states managing new issues.  Students see the contrasts, similarities and in some cases, contradictions inherent in this complex region via excursions coursework.  Students will appreciate a new perspective on the definition of a nation via this transnational experience.

Focus on Minority Human Rights

During the entire program, students focus on human rights, especially in the context of minority rights. Whether in Macedonia, Serbia, or Montenegro, these issues may take on different faces, but they remain an essential component of this program’s coursework.

See History in the Making

The Balkans is rapidly changing, on the micro- and macro-level. Students on this program will discuss today’s issues with key players, including policy makers, community leaders, government officials, and experts. Even as they study the issues, the issues will be changing, and students will find themselves in the midst of historical moments.
