Investigate Life and Culture throughout Viet Nam

With travel all over Viet Nam, access to the Vietnamese community, and experts to illuminate key questions, students have endless opportunities to explore.  Students will learn about Viet Nam’s traditions, history, present and future, and create lasting connections at the same time.

See Development Policy in Action

Students preparing to install biogas system in Vietnam.

Students on this program examine Doi Moi, a recent economic development policy that is built on the framework of socialism/communism. They study firsthand the development of the rural economy (especially tourism, tea, coffee, rice and fishing) and of specialty villages, such as ceramics and silk.

Understand Viet Nam’s Rapid Change and Success

After opening to foreign investment in a series of economic and political reforms begun in 1986 and continuing until today, Vietnam has had one of the strongest economies in Asia over the past decade and has recently become a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Understand what made this possible, and experience this vibrant period in Viet Nam’s recent history.

Explore Regional Development and Relations

Students on this program also examine Viet Nam's regional development through ASEAN and APEC and its post-embargo relationship with the United States, especially with regard to the recently ratified Bilateral Trade Agreement. Finally, they examine the relationship between the Vietnamese and the overseas Vietnamese community.
