Omar Nahas, Academic Director
Omar Nahas has worked as a researcher and lecturer on Islam in Europe since 1998, and has served as academic director of the Netherlands: Islam, Diaspora, and the EU program since 2006. Originally from Syria, Mr. Nahas studied in Brussels before moving to the Netherlands to pursue studies in languages and cultures of the Middle East at the Catholic University of Nijmegen, and sociology at the University of Amsterdam.
Mr. Nahas is a member of the Center for Islam in Europe and the founder of the Stichting YOESUF Foundation for the study of Islam and social issues. In addition to his research activities, he has developed several training programs for professionals and students aiming to understand identities of Muslims as a minority in the Western context. He has lectured at the Netherlands Seminar on Islam and Social Issues in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and conducted trainings in Belgium, Germany, and New Zealand.
As academic director, Mr. Nahas oversees the Netherlands: Islam, Diaspora, and the EU program. In addition to giving lectures and advising students, Mr. Nahas plans all academic and field-based components of the program. He draws on his extensive experience and wide range of contacts to help students develop their research and field study skills, and to ensure that students' educational needs are met.
Mohamed Moesa, Program Assistant and Homestay Coordinator
Mohamed Moesa serves as program assistant and homestay coordinator for the Netherlands program. He acts as an intermediary between students and homestay families and oversees all the travel logistics for students' educational excursions in Western Europe and Turkey.
In addition to working with the Netherlands study abroad program, Mr. Moesa works as a journalist and media specialist. His contributions to media include establishing one of the first online information resources on international film and media in Arabic.
